File Extension Wps

The WPS file extension is a Microsoft Works save file specific to certain versions of the Works Word Processor. The Microsoft Works Suite, for several versions, combined many useful office programs into an all-in-one application. Works Word Processor and Spreadsheet/Database documents ran in the same window, using a combined interface. This combined application setup used up less disk space and a smaller amount of memory, making it a boon for those with older computers without the proper system requirements to run standalone versions of the applications that the Works Suite used. Later versions changes to a more "modular" style, opening each separate part of the suite in its own window and using a similar printing manager to Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Testimonials

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

Jo H.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

Samantha J.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

While still released as Microsoft Works Suite, the program came with many related and integrated office programs as well as entertainment programs such as Encarta, Digital Image, Streets & Trips and Microsoft Money. The Works Suite also came with a copy of Microsoft Word, their popular word processing program, simultaneously upgrading each new release with any new available version of Word until the release of Word 2003. In 2008, Microsoft discontinued the all-in-one Works Suite, moving fully into standalone versions of the Works software.

More Info Regarding File Extension Wps

The Works Suite was a boon to both the private user and small businesses, both in terms of affordability and function. Even though, at the time, the file extensions used by the all in one Works Suite (.wps, along with .wks for spreadsheets and .wdb for databases) were unable to be read by other office programs of a similar nature (WordPerfect, Lotus and even other Microsoft Office software), the three extensions worked together seamlessly. Data from one was easily transferred to another without a need for conversion. Combined with its low cost for the budget-minded small business, it became a popular choice for office computers.

Due to this popularity and discontinuation, Microsoft has since released a program for converting .wps files to be read by and saved in newer Microsoft Office programs. A program published by DataViz called MacLinkPlus is available for purchase that allows converting .wps files to and from Macintosh systems. Other popular productivity software bundles, such as OpenOffice and AbiWord, have no ability to convert .wps because of copyright issues, but some variations of OpenOffice such as NeoOffice and Ubuntu have included a third party conversion utility.

While .wps files themselves are generally harmless, there is a distinct possibility of them carrying an all too common threat: the macro virus. Office programs of all kinds have a multitude of complicated functions. These functions can be simplified by the use of macros, a set of instructions embedded into the program which allows you to execute several functions at once with the press of a button or a few keystrokes. While these macros are intended to improve productivity, they have too often been used for harmful purposes.

The degree of macro virus severity is widely ranged. The simplest ones are merely meant to annoy, rearranging, deleting and/or inserting words into a document at random or causing custom error messages to pop up that contain a message from the creator of the virus. Other macro viruses are far more deadly, like the infamous Melissa virus. These macro viruses are designed to copy themselves hundreds of times, automatically mail themselves out to everyone in your Outlook address book (clogging up and crashing mail servers in the process) and delete critical system files from not only your computer but also those it is networked with.

Since these viruses are embedded into the documents and templates themselves, there's no outward way to detect them in a .wps or other office-type file. Virus scanners, both free and commercial, can scan a .wps for any potential macro virus and is recommended first thing for any files from an outside source, trusted or not. If you notice any erratic behavior with the file, the program or the computer itself, shut down the program immediately and run a virus scan. If the scanner detects a macro virus, it will isolate the file and attempt to repair any damage it may have caused. In the event of irreparable damage, numerous online sources are available to help with the issue.
